The Price of Gold is a product of years of observation and investigation of the problems caused by modern mechanized mining of gold in a rainforest area of the Colombian Pacific, where environmental degradation and cultural upheaval have been the results. In 171 pages of photographs, drawings and narrative texts, with testimonies from people of the area, the authors present a description of the rainforest and its rivers, allowing a view of the traditional lives of indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities. They explain ancestral techniques of artisanal mining, a hard and not very profitable way to work, although it did not harm the environment. But with the arrival of the machines, mechanized mining spread; it is causing horrible environmental degradation and even worse cultural and social damage.  Fortunately, in some communities, there are voices of opposition to these disasters. This book is intended to be a contribution to support the efforts of all the people who dare to raise their voices against extractive and destructive economic activity
